Month 3 of trying out EVs. First Renault Zoe, then VW ID3, now Hyundai Kona. They’ve all been great so far, I’m totally convinced. Kona looks smaller in real life than in pictures.
@seb_ly If you get a chance I recommend trying one of the new Kias. We've had the new Niro for about 6 months or so now and loving it!
@seb_ly
I can highly recommend the KIA Soul - good range of features at a decent price.
The BMW i3 is lots of fun but ££££.
First impressions; drives great like all EVs, bit more road noise than the Zoe and ID3. Lots of physical buttons - good! But a massive console in the middle which seems way too bulky.
@seb_ly
Cool!
The car I've had my eye on has been the MG 5 EV.

The only downside has been that the affordable one can't tow and the ones that can are still to expensive and too low capacity.
I have a trailer hitched to my car at the moment grossing at 1250-1300kg for a job this Easter weekend. My car is good for a 2000kg trailer.
@seb_ly nice!!! We’ve been loving the Ioniq 5. Lots of physical buttons which I like and being able to pull power from it in a pinch is a nice bonus.
@Maker_of_Things ah cool MGs just coming into my radar now - good value chinese cars are gonna flood the market soon I’m sure! I’m definitely interested in trying one
@Maker_of_Things it's funny because I have owned an MG Metro and an MGB convertible in the past so would be fun to have another one (even though each of those cars made by different people 😊 )
@seb_ly
I have been very impressed with what I have seen of the MG5 EV, and were it not for our need for using the roof rack and trailer, not possible with the early cars, I think we would have bought one new back then.
But now it seems the cost is going up faster than we can realistically aim to keep up with.
@Maker_of_Things I found this really interesting - I expect that prices will get more sensible soon www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONFSVO
@seb_ly
Ahh, yes.
I started watching that the other day and got distracted and missed most of it. It is in my watch later list. 👍
Ugh honestly the most annoying part of this process has been transferring my residents parking permit from car to car. Turns out you can only change your vehicle once, after that Brighton Council cancel your permit and make you reapply. Didn't see that anywhere before I did it! If I have to go on the waiting list again I'm not sure what I'll do 😅
And of course the online system didn't give me this information, just a "system error, contact admin" when I tried to do it. Honestly who makes these systems.
@seb_ly put a custom license in the window “for the purposes of the parking permit, this is car XYZ?
Oh and thanks to Brighton Council operative Kevin who has sorted all this out for me and assured me that their system will be updated
@seb_ly I think councils will need to update their systems to cope with more subscription car users. We loved having ours but didn’t need a permit thankfully. Just had to keep emailing work everytime I changed the car 🤣
@readysaltedcode 😅 what are you driving now? I loved driving the id3 but hated the interface.
@coldclimate on.to do month by month rentals, not cheap tho!
@coldclimate also if you are interested in trying I can give you a referral code that saves us both £100 I think
@seb_ly @coldclimate I was about to ask the same question!
@mattgrayyes @coldclimate let me know if you wanna try it out, I can refer you and we both get £100. It's not cheap, and it's not perfect, but it is good enough.
@seb_ly @mattgrayyes Next year is the year I consolidate cars and likely go EV.
@coldclimate @mattgrayyes hells yeah
@seb_ly @mattgrayyes EV daily I should say. Play toy remains ICE for a while yet
@Marcus I think the kona is basically the same car underneath! Can’t get niros on on.to but definitely one that is on my radar.
@seb_ly I really want to test drive one of the EV6s. They look so nice! 😍
I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts after you’ve gone through a few.
@seb_ly have you done many long journeys yet? We’ve only done one so far and charging points were pretty crap.
@Marcus I’ve mostly done long journeys. Charging has mostly worked out well, and even a couple of really nice experiences (charging by a lake in MK) Although the systems/usability a bit patchy. Terrible software really annoys me (both in the cars and charging network) It’s only gonna get better though.
@seb_ly Yeah, the range on ours is ~270 miles so not a huge problem. I was really shocked at how crap the charging at motoway services were. Stopped at 3 different ones and couldn't charge at any (either broke, full or not yet available).
Someone recommended to me to treat it like an ICE car, go off motorway for topping up. Not sure why that didn't occur to me at the time. 😅
